Hand-Knotted Rugs
Hand-Knotted Rugs, the Slowest Way and the Best
Every technique in rug making is a trade between speed and permanence, and hand-knotting sits at the far end of that trade. Each knot is tied individually around the warp, row upon row, thousands to the square metre. It is the reason antique rugs exist at all: nothing else made this way wears out within a lifetime.

Knotted against tufted
Hand-tufting drives yarn through a backing cloth and secures it; it is skilled work and it makes a beautiful, durable rug at a saner price. Hand-knotting ties every strand into the structure itself, so the pile is not attached to the rug, it is the rug. The result is denser, holds finer detail, lies flatter, and improves rather than tires with decades of use. One is a piece of furnishing; the other is closer to a piece of joinery.
What it is for
A hand-knotted rug is the choice when the piece is meant to stay: the principal reception room, the room a family gathers in, a commission intended to be handed down. It takes majlis dimensions without compromise and holds patterns at a resolution tufting cannot reach.
Hand-knotted at Rugberry
The Hand Knotted collection gathers our knotted work, including the Fern design in New Zealand wool and the Stratum series. Each piece is made to your measure and woven by artisans who have spent their working lives at the loom.
Questions we are asked most
How long does a hand-knotted rug take to make?
Longer than any other construction, because every knot is tied by hand. The exact time depends on size and knot density, and we confirm a date rather than a range when the commission begins.
Is hand-knotted worth the difference over hand-tufted?
If the rug is for a room you will keep for decades, yes. Knotted construction is denser, more detailed and effectively permanent. If the room changes often, a hand-tufted piece gives most of the beauty at a friendlier price.
How do I care for a hand-knotted rug?
The same quiet habits as any natural fibre rug: rotate twice a year, vacuum gently without a beater bar, underlay beneath, and a specialist clean roughly annually. Our care guide covers the detail.
Can a hand-knotted rug be made to a custom size?
Yes. Every knotted piece is made to order, to your dimensions, including oversized formats for majlis rooms and open-plan spaces.
