Alpaca does not announce itself. Its gift is quieter: a fineness most sheep's wool cannot reach, and a warmth that comes from the fibre itself rather than its thickness. An alpaca rug is the one guests cannot name but will not stop touching.
The fibre
Alpaca comes from the Andes, where the animal grew its fleece against mountain cold. The fibre is partly hollow, which is why it warms without weight, and it carries almost none of the lanolin that sheep's wool must be washed of, so it reaches the loom closer to its natural state. Its softness is structural, not treated.
Why alpaca underfoot
This is a fibre for rooms lived in barefoot: bedrooms, dressing rooms, the quiet end of a living room. The handle is gentle, the drape is heavy and calm, and the natural tones sit deep rather than bright. Alpaca rewards the rooms where you actually spend your evenings.
