Llama Rugs, the Rarest Fibre Underfoot

Most rare fibres are rare because they are hard to gather. Llama is rare in rugs for a different reason: almost nobody thinks to weave it. That is rather the point. A llama rug gives a room a surface no wool can imitate, and one that few guests will have felt before.

Handcrafted Rugberry rug in rare natural fibre, styled in a quiet interior

The fibre

Llama comes from the Andes, like its finer cousin alpaca, and shares the trait that makes both remarkable: the fibre is partly hollow. Air held inside the strand is why it warms without weight, and its natural lustre sits low and quiet rather than bright. It reaches the loom with very little processing, so the colour you see is largely the colour the animal grew.

Why llama underfoot

A llama rug has a drape and a heft that reads as calm. The surface is warm, softly lustrous, and unusually resilient for something this gentle to the hand. It belongs in the same rooms as alpaca: bedrooms, studies, the quiet side of a living room, anywhere the rug is felt as much as seen.

Llama at Rugberry

Our llama work lives in Rugberry Reserve, in the Vesper design, woven in Slate, Latte and Beige. Each piece is handcrafted, made in small number, and shown on request.

How it compares

Weighing llama against alpaca, cashmere or wool? Our material guide sets out how each fibre behaves underfoot.
