Solid and Textured Rugs: The Quiet Rugberry Edit
In a room with patterned cushions, carved furniture and a busy sofa, a solid rug lets everything else be seen. A solid does not have to be flat, though: in a good one, the fibre and the weave do the work that pattern would.
In short
- Rugberry's solid and textured rugs include Grain, Plush, Cabra and Luma, all handloom woven, in New Zealand wool, wool and jute, or silk.
- In 5x8 ft (150x240 cm), Grain Wool Rug in Sandstone is AED 3,300, Plush Wool Rug in Wheat AED 3,400, Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Sand AED 3,400 and Luma Silk Rug in Greige AED 3,100.
- For a room full of pattern and carving, such as a majlis with embroidered cushions, choose a textured solid over a flat one, because texture adds depth without adding pattern.
- A solid rug shows marks in its own way: a pale solid shows spills, a dark solid shows dust, and a mid tone with texture forgives the most.
Here are the four, sorted by what they feel like, and where each belongs.
Why choose a solid rug for a busy room?
A solid rug gives the eye somewhere to rest. Gulf living rooms are often rich in pattern and finish: embroidered majlis cushions, an inlaid coffee table, patterned curtains, a large piece of calligraphy or art on the wall. A patterned rug under all that turns the room into noise.

Rugberry's solids are all handloom woven, so their texture comes from the weave and the fibre rather than from print. The trick is to keep the rug plain in colour but rich in surface. A flat, single tone rug in a busy room can look like an afterthought; a textured one looks deliberate. For more on quiet colour, read our guide to neutral rugs.
Grain: what does a low handloom wool solid feel like?
The Grain Wool Rug is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a low, closely worked surface, and you can see the weave underfoot. It is the most practical solid in the edit.

In Sandstone it is a warm beige that sits beside teak, cane and pale marble. A low surface lets dining chairs slide and lets crumbs and fine dust lift in one vacuum pass. Grain comes in 5x8 to 12x15 ft (150x240 to 360x450 cm); see the Grain collection for all its colourways.
Plush: what does a deep handloom wool solid feel like?
The Plush Wool Rug is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a deep, quiet pile, plush underfoot and soft. It is the solid for bare feet.
In Wheat it is a soft golden beige. Deep pile shows the direction it was last brushed, so expect gentle light and dark patches where people walk; that is the pile, not a stain. Choose Plush for bedrooms and sitting rooms rather than under a dining table.
Keep the rug plain in colour but rich in surface, and the room looks deliberate.
Cabra: what does wool with jute bring?
The Cabra Wool & Jute Rug is handloom woven in wool and jute, firm and textured, with the wool softening the natural irregularity of the jute. It is the most rustic of the four.

In Sand it reads as a fine rib, close to the colour of raw jute. Cabra suits an entrance, a glass-fronted sunroom or a living room with cane and clay tones. The jute gives it a firm hand, and the wool keeps it from feeling scratchy. At 7 to 8 mm it is also the lowest of the four, so doors clear it easily, and it starts from AED 3,400 in 5x8 ft.
Luma: what does a silk solid add?
The Luma Silk Rug is handloom woven in silk, its surface holding the light and letting it go. A silk solid is never quite one colour, because the sheen shifts as you move.

In Greige it is a grey beige that turns silvery near a large window and warm under lamps. Luma Greige is listed from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. Keep it to a bedroom or a formal sitting room, away from the dining table and the main walkway.
How do the four solids compare?
Choose by the room's traffic first, then by feel. Grain and Cabra take the most wear; Plush and Luma give the most comfort and light.
| Grain Sandstone | Plush Wheat | Cabra Sand | Luma Greige | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre | New Zealand wool | New Zealand wool | Wool and jute | Silk |
| Surface | Low, close weave | Deep pile | Firm rib | Smooth, with sheen |
| 5x8 ft | AED 3,300 | AED 3,400 | AED 3,400 | AED 3,100 |
| Best room | Dining, family room | Bedroom | Entrance, living room | Formal sitting room |
For a villa dining room where the family gathers every day, choose Grain over Plush, because chairs slide on a low weave and a deep pile catches every crumb.
Do solid rugs show marks?
Yes. Every rug shows something, and a solid shows it more plainly because there is no pattern to hide it. Pale solids show spilled Arabic coffee and tea; dark solids show dust and lint.

A mid tone with texture forgives the most. Grain in Sandstone and Cabra in Sand both break up the surface enough that everyday dust and small marks blend in. Blot spills at once, and vacuum on suction weekly. Order a swatch of any solid you are considering, since a single colour is the hardest thing to judge on a screen.
Frequently asked questions
Which solid rug is best for a dining room?
A low handloom wool rug such as Grain is best under a dining table, because chairs slide over it and crumbs lift easily.
Is a silk solid rug practical?
A silk solid like Luma is practical in a bedroom or a formal sitting room. In a busy family room or near a dining table, wool lasts better.
Will a solid rug look boring?
Not if it has texture. A handloom weave, a deep pile or a silk sheen gives a single colour depth, especially in a room with pattern elsewhere.
Can I order a solid rug in a custom colour?
Yes. Grain, Plush, Cabra and Luma can all be made in any size and any colour to your measure.
