Custom Rugs for Los Angeles Interior Designers: How the Process Works

Los Angeles interior designers commission custom rugs for a simple reason. The rooms they work on rarely match a stock size. A great room in the hills, a living room opened to the garden, a primary bedroom with a wall of glass, none of these resolve neatly around a standard 8x10 area rug. This is a plain account of how the process works with Rugberry, from first enquiry to the day the rug is unrolled on site.

Who we are, briefly

Rugberry is a rug house based in Dubai. Every piece is made by hand, hand-tufted, handwoven, handloom or hand-knotted, in New Zealand wool, wool and silk, pure silk, jute, and a small group of rare fibres, mohair, alpaca, cashmere, merino and llama. We work to the trade daily, in the Gulf and in the United States. For an overview of what we deliver to California, our Los Angeles page covers the essentials in one place.

Step one, the brief

Most projects start with an email or a call. Useful things to send at this stage: the floor plan or room dimensions in feet and inches, the flooring material, photographs or renders if you have them, and any direction on colour. A FF&E line item is enough to begin. If the piece is for a specific furniture layout, the sofa and table dimensions matter more than the room itself, because the rug is sized to the furniture group, not the walls.

Step two, design and material

You can work three ways. First, specify an existing design from the catalogue in a custom size and colour. Almost everything we make is customisable, any size, any colour. Second, adapt a design, keep the pattern, shift the palette to the scheme. Third, bring your own artwork and have it made as a rug. The full sequence, from floor plan to finished piece, is set out in our note on the bespoke rug design process.

Material follows use. New Zealand wool is the default for living rooms and high-traffic spaces, dense, resilient and quiet underfoot. Wool and silk adds a subdued sheen where light moves through the room. For projects that call for something rarer, the Rugberry Reserve line covers mohair, alpaca, cashmere, merino and llama, priced on enquiry, with tear sheets available for each design.

Step three, approval

Before anything is made, you approve the design, the exact dimensions, the material and the colours in writing. Nothing goes on the loom until the specification is agreed. If a detail is still open, the order waits. This is slower than pressing a button and it is the reason remakes are rare.

Step four, making

The rug is then made by hand to your dimensions. Hand-tufted, handwoven and handloom pieces take about 30 days to make. Hand-knotted pieces take about 60 days, because knotting is slower by nature. These timelines are for the making itself and they are stated in every quote, so the schedule can be planned around them rather than discovered later.

Step five, delivery to Los Angeles

Finished rugs ship from Dubai to the United States in roughly 10 to 14 days. The quote you approve covers shipping and duties, they are handled in the quote, so the price you approve is the price you pay. There is no separate freight negotiation at the end of the project and no surprise invoice while the install is underway. Rugs arrive rolled and wrapped, ready for placement.

Sizes, and what custom really means

Catalogue designs run in standard sizes from 5x8 ft up to 12x15 ft. Custom means the sizes between and beyond, a 14 ft rug for a double seating group, a runner cut to the exact length of a corridor, a round rug sized to a foyer. If the drawing calls for it, we make it. For rooms at Californian scale, our guide to sizing a rug for a great room is a useful companion.

What a quote contains

Pricing depends on size, material and technique, so quotes are itemised rather than listed. A quote states the design, the exact dimensions, the fibre, the making timeline, the shipping window and the delivered price. Hand-knotted work costs more than hand-tufted work of the same size because it takes roughly twice as long to make, and rare fibres cost more than wool because the raw material does. For budgeting at concept stage, send the room sizes and a material direction and ask for a range, that is a normal request and a quick one to answer.

Working to the trade

Designers who order with us regularly join the trade program, which is built for exactly this workflow, specification support, custom sizing and direct communication with the workshop. The details are in the designer's guide to the trade program. There is no address to visit in the United States, the work is run remotely from the Dubai sales office over email, calls and couriered samples, and the process is built to run that way.

Questions designers ask

Can you match a paint or fabric reference. Yes, send the reference and we colour to it. Can you hold a deadline. The making and shipping timelines above are the honest answer, work back from the install date and add a margin. Can we see the design before it is made. Yes, the approval step exists for that reason. Can you make more than one rug for a project. Yes, and it is common, a house is usually three to six rugs specified together so the palette holds across rooms.

Starting a project

Send the floor plan and the direction to info@shoprugberry.com, or call +971 55 303 9091. The Dubai sales office at 1804 Al Ameri Tower, Barsha Heights is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Dubai time, which overlaps the start of the Los Angeles working day. A first quote, with sizes, material options and timelines, usually follows within a few days of a complete brief.
