Flatweave or Pile Rug: Which Suits Your Room

Choose a flatweave where doors swing over the rug, where the floor is swept daily or where you want a rug you can turn over. Choose a pile rug where people sit, lie or walk barefoot for long stretches and where the room needs softening.

In short

  • A flatweave rug has no raised pile: the weave itself is the surface, so the rug is thin, light and often reversible.
  • A pile rug has yarn standing up from the base, which cushions the foot, absorbs sound and hides footprints.
  • Rugberry low, flat weaves such as the Kora Jute Rug and the Cabra Wool & Jute Rug start from AED 2,000 and AED 3,400 in 5x8 ft / 150x240 cm.
  • Rugberry pile rugs such as the Plush Wool Rug in camel and the Ivory Wool Rug start from AED 3,400 and AED 2,900 in the same size.

What is the difference between a flatweave and a pile rug?

A flatweave is woven so that the weft threads form the face of the rug, with nothing standing up from it. A pile rug has tufts or knots of yarn rising from a base, cut to an even height.

The Kora Jute Rug is handwoven in natural jute, flat and firm at 10 mm. The Cabra Wool & Jute Rug is handloom woven in New Zealand wool and jute at 7 to 8 mm. The Plush Wool Rug in camel is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a deep, quiet pile. Both are made by hand, but they behave very differently on the floor.

Will the rug stop a door from opening?

A flatweave almost never will, while a pile rug often needs checking. Measure the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor with a ruler, then compare it with the rug's thickness at the swatch or product stage.

Some apartments and villas have bedroom and terrace doors hung low, or a small threshold strip, to keep dust and cool air in. If the gap is tight, a pile rug will catch the door every time, wear unevenly along that line and eventually curl.

The fix is either a flatweave, or a pile rug placed so the door swing ends just short of it. Leave the door's arc clear, and the problem disappears.

Check thresholds too. A raised marble strip between rooms can lift the edge of a thick rug and turn it into a trip line, so keep pile rugs fully inside one room.

Which is easier with daily sweeping and mopping?

A flatweave is easier to live with when the floor is swept and mopped every morning. It is light enough to lift with one hand, shake out on the balcony and put back once the floor has dried.

A pile rug is heavier, so most homes sweep around it and vacuum it separately. A wet mop should never touch the rug, and the floor underneath must be dry before the rug goes back, especially on marble or porcelain in humid months.

If the rug must be lifted every morning, it should be light enough to lift with one hand.

A rug pad helps both types stay put on polished marble or porcelain. Fit one before laying either type on a smooth floor.

Which works better for floor seating?

A pile rug works better for floor seating. Sitting on a flat rug over marble is still sitting on marble, while a dense wool pile takes the pressure off knees and ankles.

For a majlis corner, a family gathering or children playing on the floor, the deep pile of Plush or the dense, even pile of the Ivory Wool Rug makes the difference. A flatweave can be layered with floor cushions and bolsters instead, if you prefer the lighter rug.

Can a flatweave go on a covered balcony?

Only with care, and only under cover. Rugberry's flat weaves are made for indoor rooms, so they are not outdoor proof and should not sit in rain or all-day sun.

A covered terrace or a sunroom is a reasonable place if the rug is brought in when the sun is strongest. For truly open spaces, choose a rug made for outdoor use instead.

Flatweave or pile: which suits each room?

Match the rug to how the room is used. The table below is a starting point for most homes in the Gulf.

Room Suggested type Reason
Bedroom with low door Flatweave Clears the door swing
Living room with floor seating Pile Comfort for long sitting
Dining room Flatweave or low pile Chairs slide easily
Passage swept daily Flatweave Easy to lift and shake
Home theatre or study Pile Absorbs sound

For a bedroom where the door sweeps the floor, choose a flatweave over a pile rug because it will not catch. For a living room where the family sits on the floor, choose pile because comfort matters more there than weight. Reversible rugs are explained in our note on reversible rugs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a flatweave rug the same as a reversible rug?

Not always, but many flatweaves are reversible because both faces are woven. Check each rug's description to see whether it is made to be turned over.

Does a flatweave rug slip on tiles?

A light flatweave can slide on porcelain tiles or polished marble. A thin rug pad underneath keeps it in place and protects the floor from grit.

Is a pile rug warmer than a flatweave?

Yes. A pile rug traps air between its fibres, so it feels warmer underfoot on a cold marble floor and quieter in any season.
