Article: What Size Rug for a Californian Great Room

Handcrafted Rugberry area rug sized to an open-plan great room in strong daylight

What Size Rug for a Californian Great Room

The great room is the defining American plan, and in Southern California it is close to universal. Living, dining and kitchen share one volume, glass replaces one wall, and nothing physically divides the space. The rug is then not decoration. It is the only element telling you where the living room begins and ends.

Which is why the commonest sizing failure in these houses is not an ugly rug. It is a rug two sizes too small, sitting under a coffee table with every sofa leg on bare oak, making a room full of expensive furniture look temporary.

Start from the seating, not from the room

Measure the seating arrangement first, not the floor. Take the outer edge of the furniture group at its widest and its deepest, then add margin on every side. That figure, not the room's dimensions, is the rug you need.

The standard worth holding to is all four legs of every seating piece on the rug, with 8 to 18 inches of visible floor between the rug's edge and the nearest wall or walkway. Front legs only is the compromise version, acceptable in a tight room and rarely necessary in a great room, where the floor area is the one thing you are not short of.

Run the numbers on a common arrangement. A 10 foot sectional with a chair opposite and a console behind occupies roughly 13 by 11 feet. Add margin and you are at 14 by 12, or a little over. The nearest stock size, 9x12, is nearly two feet short in one direction and three in the other. It will look like a place mat, and no amount of quality in the weave will fix that.

The sizes that solve it, and why they are never in stock

The formats that actually suit a Californian great room are 10x14, 12x15, and for a room that runs the depth of the house, 10x16 and longer. These are not sizes retail carries in any depth, because they are expensive to hold as inventory and slow to sell. That is a warehouse problem, not a design one.

Every Rugberry design can be made at any of them, and at the dimensions between. If the right answer is 13 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 6 inches because of where a structural column falls, that is the rug we cut. The sizing rules stay the same, you simply stop rounding them to whatever the chart allows.

Two rugs or one

In a long great room, the honest question is whether one rug or two serves the space better. One large rug unifies the volume and works when the seating and dining sit close together. Two, one under the seating and a second under the dining table, reads better when the two functions are genuinely separated by distance or by a change in ceiling height.

If you go with two, they should relate but not match. Same material family, same tonal range, different scale of pattern. Two identical rugs in one sightline look like a shortage of ideas.

The dining half

Dining is arithmetic rather than taste. Chairs must stay on the rug when pulled out, which means the table's length and width plus at least 30 inches on every side. A 96 inch table therefore wants a rug at least 13 feet long. Keep the pile low and dense so chairs slide rather than catch. A textured flat weave like the Grain Collection is built for exactly this job.

Material, in a room made of glass

Great rooms are bright, and brightness is the real test of a rug. New Zealand wool is the default because it holds its colour under direct sun and recovers from the traffic a shared room takes. Wool and silk blends shift and lift as the light moves across the day, which suits the seating half of the room more than the dining half. Where a room opens onto a terrace and feet arrive from outside, a firmer jute and wool weave earns its place.

On pale floors, white oak and limestone especially, tonal weaves in sand, greige and camel give the eye something to settle on without committing the room to a colour it then has to answer to.

What to send us

A floor plan with the furniture marked is ideal. Photographs of the room from two corners and a rough measurement of the seating group is enough to start. We draw the rug to scale against the plan, and if two layouts are plausible we draw both before anything is made. Colour is matched to a fabric swatch, a paint reference or the photographs, and a strike-off, a physical sample of the weave in your colours, is made and approved before weaving begins.

More on how the whole process runs, and what we ship where in Southern California, is on our Los Angeles page. Shipping and duties are handled in the quote, so the price you approve is the price you pay.

Write to info@shoprugberry.com with the plan and we will size it with you.
