How to Size a Rug: Majlis, Living Room, Dining Room and Bedroom

Most rugs that look wrong in a room are not the wrong colour or the wrong pattern; they are the wrong size. Undersized is the near-universal mistake, a rug floating in the middle of a floor like an island nobody visits. The rules below are simple, and because every Rugberry piece is made to measure, there is no size chart forcing you to break them.

The one rule that governs everything

Furniture connects to the rug or the rug looks accidental. In seating areas, at minimum the front legs of every piece sit on the rug. When a rug is cut for the room, all legs on with a generous margin is better still, and it is what makes a space read as composed rather than furnished.

The majlis

The majlis takes the largest rug in the house: one surface holding all the seating together, with margins beyond. In most Gulf majlis rooms that means four metres and up, often five or six. This is where made to measure stops being a luxury and becomes the only way to get the size at all, and where forms drawn around the seating arrangement earn their keep.

The living room

Front legs on, always, and leave a border of visible floor between rug and wall, roughly 20 to 45 centimetres, or 8 to 18 inches, depending on the room's size. Wall to wall reads as carpet; a sliver of floor around the rug frames it.

The dining room

Arithmetic, not taste: chairs must remain on the rug when pulled out. Take the table's dimensions and add at least 75 centimetres, about 30 inches, on every side. A low, dense pile lets chairs move; textured wool like the Grain Collection is built for exactly this.

The bedroom

Two arrangements work. One large rug under the bed, extending at least 60 centimetres, about two feet, beyond each side, so bare feet land on softness. Or a pair of runners flanking the bed, which suits rooms where the bed sits close to walls. Bedrooms are where the softness budget goes: deep plush wool or the rare fibres of Rugberry Reserve.

Corridors and runners

A runner should be cut to the corridor, leaving an even border of floor along each side and finishing short of doorways. Off-the-shelf lengths almost never match a real corridor, which is why runners are a made to measure job by nature.

When the room is unusual

Open-plan spaces, furniture at an angle, columns, curved walls: these are not problems, they are briefs. Rounds, organic forms and shaped rugs drawn around the architecture solve what a rectangle cannot.
