Rugs for the Majlis: Size, Material and Placement

The majlis asks more of a rug than any other room in the house. It seats many guests at once, often close to the floor, it hosts long evenings of coffee and conversation, and it is the room by which a home is judged. Choosing a majlis rug is therefore a question of scale, material and placement before it is ever a question of pattern. This guide covers each in turn, drawing on the rugs we make by hand in Dubai for homes across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider GCC.

Start with size, and err on the generous side

A majlis rug should hold the entire seating arrangement, not float in the middle of it. Where a living room rug can stop at the front legs of a sofa, floor seating leaves no such allowance: cushions, backrests and the guests themselves all sit directly on the pile. In practice this means the largest formats in the catalogue, 10x14 ft and 12x15 ft, are the natural starting points, with an even margin of stone or wood left visible around the edge of the room. Our rug sizing guide sets out the numbers room by room; the principle for the majlis is simply that the rug defines the gathering, so let it reach.

Majlis proportions vary more than any other room, from long narrow halls to broad squares, which makes this the space where a made to measure rug earns its place. A rug cut to the room, with the same border showing on every side, reads as considered in a way no standard size can. The steps from floor plan to finished rug are described on our custom rugs page.

Materials that stand up to company

New Zealand wool is the natural choice for the majlis. It is resilient underfoot, it recovers from the pressure of seating, and it keeps its colour through years of sun and air conditioning. A blend of wool and silk adds a quiet sheen that moves as the light changes through the day. For rooms that entertain most nights of the week, a hand-knotted rug is the traditional answer: dense, low and made to outlast the furniture around it. If you are weighing the fibres against each other, our material guide compares them in detail.

Placement follows the seating

In a majlis arranged around the perimeter, the rug should run close to the seating line on all sides so that no guest sits half on and half off. Keep the pile moderate: a very deep pile is generous in a bedroom but unsteady under trays and low tables. If the room carries a chandelier or a ceiling detail, align the rug to it, since that is the line the eye reads first.

Colour and pattern at seated height

The majlis is seen from close to the floor, so the surface matters more here than in any other room. Quiet grounds, ivory, sand, taupe and camel, flatter both traditional and contemporary seating, and a pattern should read at the scale of the whole room rather than in small repeats. Darker grounds such as charcoal and chocolate hide the traffic of a busy household and sit well against pale stone floors.
