The fibre
Silk, light made liquid
Silk is the longest natural fibre there is, drawn as a continuous filament rather than spun from short staples. That unbroken length is what gives a silk rug its deep, even lustre. Light slides along the strand and the whole surface answers it, changing tone as you cross the room. Underfoot it is cool and fluid, with a fineness no other natural fibre reaches. Silk takes dye more deeply than wool, so colour sits in it with unusual richness, from the palest ivory to the darkest charcoal. In Silk Ridge the fibre is handloom woven into close horizontal bands, so the lustre breaks and gathers along the ribs rather than lying flat. The surface reads as texture first and colour second.
