Caring for Luxury Rugs in the UAE Climate
A handmade rug is built to outlive its first house. What shortens its life is rarely walking on it; it's the local trinity of sun, sand and year-round air conditioning, plus a few well-meant cleaning mistakes. The good news is that care in the UAE is mostly about small habits, not effort.
Sun is the patient thief
Hard light through villa glass will, over months, lift colour from any natural fibre. Rotate the rug twice a year so light ages it evenly, and place silk where the sun visits rather than lives. Sheer curtains during peak hours pay for themselves in colour kept.

Sand is friction
What dulls a pile isn't dirt sitting on it but grit grinding at its base. The answer is unglamorous: vacuum regularly, gently, without a beater bar, and let the suction do the work. At entrances from gardens and terraces, a jute rug is a willing first line of defence.
Air conditioning dries; humidity spikes
Wool prefers the UAE's indoor air to most climates, but the swing between chilled rooms and humid summers asks one thing: let a rug breathe. Underlay helps, and a professional clean roughly once a year, by someone who knows natural fibres, resets what daily care cannot.
Spills are a race won calmly
Blot immediately, never rub, water sparingly, and no supermarket sprays on wool or silk. If a stain wins the first round, stop and call a specialist rather than escalating; nearly every disaster we've seen was the second attempt, not the spill.
Care by material
Wool forgives, silk and cashmere do not. Our material guide sets out how each fibre behaves before you choose one.
The habits that matter
Rotate twice yearly. Vacuum gently and often. Keep silk out of resident sun. Underlay beneath, specialist clean annually, and blot, never rub. That's the whole discipline; the rug does the rest for decades.
